A small two-hundred-year-old house sits at the base of a beautiful and steep hill. Much of this project was an act of editing. The landscape as it exists has strong bones, but generations of previous owners had added and added to the point of fussiness. With our client, we developed a master plan to be implemented over a few years.
The major moves included a large amount of stone work - new walls were added to the front of the house, the hill and around the driveway, each creating a clear plane for a landscape 'room'. A patio was added to extend the small living room on the side of the house, with a parallel hedges, creating a strong anchor for the house. In addition, we re-located a garden shed and added a cutting and vegetable garden, and tied the areas behind the house together with careful infill of the existing patio.
